Asbestos is the name of a mineral group that occurs naturally as a mass of fibers, which can be separated into thin threads and woven. Because these fibers cannot be affected be heat or chemicals, and because they do not conduct electricity, they are useful in many industries; however, the fiber masses have a tendency to break easily into a dust that can float in the air, stick to clothes, and can easily be inhaled and swallowed, increasing the risk of asbestosis, mesothelioma, and cancer of the lungs, larynx, and esophagus.
Because of these properties, asbestos is no longer legal in the construction of most structures; however, asbestos still exists in many structures built before these regulations took affect. If you detect asbestos in your home, or would like your home inspected for asbestos, contact a professional who specializes in asbestos services. Do not attempt to remove the asbestos yourself, as there are strict preventative codes and regulations regarding asbestos removal.
For asbestos services and removal, look in your local yellow pages under Asbestos Abatement.
If you are planning a construction project in the State of Arizona that involves the removal of asbestos, you should contact the State of Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) for guidelines, policies and procedures.
