If you are planning a construction project in the City of Yuma that involves any type of new construction, remodel, electrical, mechanical or plumbing type work, a permit and inspection are generally required. Although there are some minor facets of construction that don’t require permits, the vast majority do.
The Building Safety Division in the City of Yuma Department of Community Development can assist you with the required steps for pulling a permit and scheduling inspections. We can also inform you about types of work that do not require permits such as fencing, painting and minor repairs.
A permit application, accompanied by construction plans, is required to be submitted to the City of Yuma Department of Community Development for review prior to permit issuance. In general, review times for residential type projects are 5 work days and commercial projects are 30 work days. Fees must be paid and a permit issued prior to the construction work commencing. Once the permit is issued inspections are required for the different disciplines of the construction. All work must be inspected prior to covering and moving on to the next step. When calling for inspections please plan on a 24-hour response time from our field inspectors. All calls for inspections that are received prior to 3 p.m. will be scheduled for inspection the next business day. Once the construction is complete and all required inspections have been completed and approved, the building official will issue a Certificate of Occupancy. There shall be no occupancy to any building or structure until this certificate is issued.
