In the United States and Canada, dialing 911 is the fastest way to get help in a life threatening emergency when you need police, fire personnel or an ambulance. It is important to dial 911 only in a life threatening emergency. When you call 911 for a non-life threatening emergency the operator is taking time to assist you when there may be someone else with a life threatening emergency that needs their assistance.
When to call 911;
- there has been a car accident
- if you see a crime, such as someone breaking into a home or car or someone hurting someone else
- if someone collapses or passes out
- if there is a house or building on fire
When not to call 911;
- to report a crime that has already been committed
- if someone dares you to see what would happen
- if you have a question about a parking ticket
